Valheim Players Losing Progress, Characters & Worlds Due to the “World Destroying” Bug

Since its launch earlier this month, Valheim has quickly become one of the most popular games on the market. However, some players have been hit with a game-breaking bug. Now being called the “World Destroyer Bug”, it’s deleting player characters and progress. As of now, the developers at Iron Gate have not found a fix for the bug.

Richard Svensson, CEO of Iron Gate, said that the bug is extremely rare and the team is hard at work on a fix. Still, he recommends backing up data.

While there is no official patch or fix available yet, there is a simple way to protect your saved files from the bug – avoid using ALT + F4 to close the game and simply exit via the main menu. Svennson isn’t sure why this occurs but apparently using ALT + F4 to close Valheim makes it more likely that your progress will get deleted. So, using the main menu to quit a session should be your go-to till the World Destroyer is destroyed.

You can also back-up your progress by following this simple step-by-step guide:

  • Enable Hidden Folders on your PC as the following pathway will likely be hidden by default
  • Head to ‘C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\‘ where all the data for the game saves
  • Simply copy all the data from that folder into another folder in your PC or on your external HDD

In spite of being in Early Access, Valheim has already sold an impressive one million units and is currently the top game on Steam charts. Over on Twitch, it is outperforming its peers by over 75,000 concurrent viewers; that makes it 10,000 more than Apex Legends and a few thousand short of Dota 2.

At the moment, Valheim is only available on PC but Iron Gate is open to porting the game to other platforms with the main focus currently being on PS5 and the XBox Series X.
