Valve is Already Thinking of New Ideas for their Steam Deck 2

The Steam Deck has only just launched, with the first wave of shipments ready to meet their respective destinations. Many of those who had reserved a spot for buying the Deck when it was released have yet to get one in hand, but Valve is already busy thinking of new ideas they can implement in Steam Deck 2.

The Steam Deck is Valve’s latest handheld system designed to handle even AAA titles. The console uses the Steam catalog and has over 240 games verified to function perfectly. Even big titles such as God of War and Elden Ring have been verified for the console. Given all of this, it would make sense for Valve to take its foot off the gas and enjoy the taste of success. But they are doing the exact opposite.

Valve is already thinking of plans for the successor to the Steam Deck. The company recently spoke with Edge Magazine on the release of their handheld. Gabe Newell, during the interview, confirmed that Valve has plans for the successor to a “Steam Deck 2” in place.

When speaking on the most popular version of the Steam Deck being the most expensive option, Newell said,

That’s why we always love to get something out there and ship it. Because we learn a lot from that, and it helps frame our thinking for Deck 2. They’re basically saying, ‘We would like an even more expensive version of this’ in terms of horsepower capabilities or whatever.

Gabe Newell

He discussed more about the Steam Deck 2, stating there would be “second iterations.” With regards to what customers want, he went on to say,

The second iterations are going to be more about: What are the capabilities that mobile gives us, above and beyond what you would get in a traditional desktop or laptop?

It’s interesting to see Valve working on the second version of their console when the first one is yet to land in customers’ hands. While the second version will have more power and better specs, will it be able to handle the constantly advancing tech in gaming? We’ll have to wait and find out.
