Get Ready to Experience Cyberpunk 2077 in VR Soon with Upcoming Mod

Cyberpunk 2077 is slowly becoming a game that is finally in some playable condition. So much so that people have been picking it up once again during the Steam Black Friday Sale. Now, a new mod will allow you to experience Night City like never before, putting you right in the middle of all the action with VR.

The new VR mod comes from the same independent modder who created the R.E.A.L. VR mods for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5. Luke Ross, the modder, made a poll on his Patreon page, giving subscribers the chance to pick his new project. Cyberpunk 2077 was the winner.

Luke is a VR enthusiast and has created his own VR engine called “VR Injection Framework” to create mods for games that do not have native VR support. This endeavor includes both first-person games and dealing with the many difficulties posed by third-person titles that require a fake camera first-person point of view for the VR mod, as he did for Mafia 3.

For now, the games Luke chooses to mod still use a gamepad instead of VR controllers but do offer the whole VR head-tracking experience. Cyberpunk 2077’s deep immersion into the game and the fantastic views Night City has to offer made it a no-brainer pick for those answering the poll.

Luke Ross mentioned that the mod should be released soon when speaking to PCGamer. If nothing goes awry, he is hopeful that the mod will be ready to launch by January. Given that the game is already in first-person, it will save him time and the task of creating the fake first-person camera.

He also mentioned that the REDengine 4 that the game uses is not difficult to work with when making the VR mod. Keep in mind that none of the engines are super VR-friendly, and with Cyberpunk 2077 still littered with bugs, the modder could run into some issues.

Ross spoke about the game’s instability and how he felt it might impact the creation and functioning of the mod. He said he is hopeful the mod is completed before the games’ next update; the one fans hope adds car customization to the game. Issues aside, Ross feels he has the necessary expertise and knowledge to deliver mods quickly.

Now that my modding framework is approaching some level of maturity, I can probably release one game per month on average.

Many fans had expressed their interest in VR for the game before release, but with the debacle of a launch, CD Projekt Red had their hands complete with just having the game function as intended. The studio has now announced that they are working on an upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion. Unless they change their mind, this VR mod may be fans’ only method of getting the game off their TVs.
