Recently in an update last month, many Valheim players saw a new option when launching the game that allows them to play with something called ‘Vulkan’; those unfamiliar with the term were left in confusion.
1. What Does ‘Play Valheim with Vulkan’ Mean?
Vulkan is a 3D Graphics API developed by Khronos Group (a group of industry-leading companies) to an alternative to the widespread Microsoft DirectX. Valheim recently added the Vulkan API, and users can use it to play the game.
The reason to use Vulkan to play Valheim is to use all the rig’s potential by utilizing the CPU and GPU more efficiently. If you’ve never used Vulkan for Valheim before, it’s time to give it a try.
2. Should you Use Vulkan to Play Valheim?
Many people reported that using Vulkan to play Valheim improved their gameplay experience. For me, Valheim was smoother than the default DirectX as the game ran better.
Obviously, your experience would vary, but I would say it is worth a try And if you find it challenging to get a stable frame rate, then Vulkan might exactly be the thing you need. Here’s how you can enable Vulkan in Valheim.
3. How to Enable Vulkan in Valheim?
Turning the Vulkan API for Valheim is relatively easy and can be done through Steam.
- Right-click on Valheim in your Steam Library and select ‘Properties.’
- Under the General Tab, in Launch Options, add ‘-force-vulkan’ without the quotes.
- Now start Valheim and you will see a window popup asking if you want to play Valheim or play Valheim with Vulkan. Select the second option to play using the new API.
That’s it! Now you can start using the Vulkan Graphics API to play Valheim.
