What year does Ragnarok take place in? How old are Kratos and Atreus? – God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok takes place three years after the events of the first game. At the end of the first game, Fimbulwinter begins which signals the beginning of the countdown to Ragnarok. Fimbulwinter goes on for three years and the day it ends, Ragnarok begins.

God of War (2018) took place in 535 AD so it only makes sense that God of War Ragnarok takes place in 538 AD, three years after the end of the first game. It hasn’t been officially confirmed, but fans have speculated that the new God of War games take place between the years 500-600 AD.

Kratos – God of War Ragnarok

Kratos is around 200 years old in God of War Ragnarok, which takes place three years after God of War (2018). His age has not been officially revealed in any of the games or in any novelizations. However, there have been speculations about his age since the first game.

If you leave out the previous God of War games and only count his age in the new games, then Kratos is aged around 200 years old in God of War Ragnarok, which takes place three years after the original game. Here is a detailed blog on a how Kratos’ age was discovered

Atreus – God of War Ragnarok

Atreus was 11 years old in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok takes place three years after the events of the first game. Hence, Atreus is 14 years old in God of War Ragnarok. Through the novelization of the first game, we get to know his age before Ragnarok.

While Atreus’ age is easy to determine, thanks to the novelization, it is still very hard to determine Kratos’ age. The God of War has been around for over 1,000 years, surviving the destruction of the Greek Pantheon as well as travelling to the Norse Pantheon in order to start a new life.

Why does Kratos age if he is a God?

Kratos has clearly aged between the events of God of War III and God of War (2018). The power of the gods grants Kratos the ability to age slower than a normal human being and also makes him impossible to get killed. Kratos died two times in the previous games but came back to life stronger than ever.

However, Kratos is cursed by the gods for his sins to never be able to die by his own hands. This would explain the ending of God of War III where Kratos sacrifices himself by impaling himself with the Blade of Olympus, releasing the power of Hope to the world.

Is Atreus a God or a Giant?

Atreus is part Giant which he got from his mother Faye, quarter God, which he inherited from his father Kratos and quarter human. Kratos was born a Demigod but became a God, once he killed the previous Greek God of War, Ares.

Atreus’ Jötunn heritage grants him the ability to foresee future events, as he predicted Thor visiting their home three years after Fimbulwinter. He also has the ability to shapeshift into a wolf and a bear when he becomes enraged, similar to Kratos’ Spartan Rage.
