The Last of Us 1 is a mesmerizing action-adventure survival game with a captivating storyline and absolutely perfect gameplay. Its story revolves around Joel, a smuggler, and a teenage girl, Ellie, trying to survive a “zombie outbreak” caused by a mutant Cordyceps fungus in a post-apocalyptic USA.
The Last of Us 1 mostly takes place in 2033, but its prologue featuring the “zombie fungus” outbreak transpires in 2013.
In the prologue, Joel’s 12-year-old daughter Sarah is shot dead by a soldier as they flee amidst the chaos caused by the outbreak. The game takes a 20-year time skip after this heart wrenching event which marks the beginning of the main story.
In 2033, Joel was tasked by Marlene, the commander of the Fireflies, to escort Ellie across the US to the Fireflies HQ in Salt Lake City so that she could undergo scientific research because she miraculously turned out to be immune to the infection.
However, after reaching the HQ, Joel learned that the doctors there wished to dissect Ellie’s brain to study her immunity. Thus, both of them ended up escaping the HQ in the Spring of 2034 at the end of the game.
Joel and Ellie then return in the sequel, The Last of Us 2.
When did The Last of Us 2 take place?
The Last of Us 2 takes place in 2039, five years after the events of the first part and 26 years after the first outbreak of the infection.
The story begins from where it was left in part 1 when Joel and Ellie ended up escaping the fireflies HQ and took shelter in Tommy’s settlement.
Even though only five years had passed from the end of part 1, Joel and Ellie look significantly grown up in the sequel.
How old is Joel in The Last of Us 1?
Joel is 52 years old in The Last of Us. His birthday is revealed to be September 24, 1981, when he presents his passports to the military in the quarantine zone.
This makes Joel around 32 years old during the beginning scene of the game and 57 years old in The Last of Us 2.
How old is Ellie in The Last of Us 1?
Ellie is 14 years old in the summer of 2033 in The Last of Us. At the end of the first game in mid-2034, she turned 15.
The game nowhere shows or announces her birthday, but Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, confirmed that Ellie was born in Spring.
Thus, it is confirmed that she turned 19 years old in The Last of Us 2 which takes place in winter of the year 2039.

The Last of Us Part II is a an action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. The game is set 5 years after the events of the first game.
Players control Ellie on her journey for revenge against The Wolves, a faction which has set up in Seattle. On her journey, Ellie fights against survivors of the Cordyceps apocalypse and new variants of the infected. The game mixes elements of stealth and gun-play in vast areas, allowing players to approach the situation as they see fit. The Last of Us Part 2 received an overall positive reception and has gone on to win several Game of the Year awards.
