After players gather Black Boxes in Horizon Forbidden West, they might wonder what purpose these items serve. As it turns out, these collectibles play a crucial role in the game apart from offering slight glances into the Old Ones.
You’ll find a woman named Untalla, a Black Box Collector, in Memorial Grave. She’s on the lookout for Black Boxes and will provide you with rare resources in return for them. Moreover, you can secure these objects with the help of Data Points in the Notebook Menu, so you don’t lose your progress.
You can find a total of 12 Black Boxes spread across the map in Horizon Forbidden West. Players can obtain them in locations such as No Man’s Land, Jagged Deep, The Whitewatch Peaks, The Promontory, Bleeding Mark, The Stillsands, The Memorial Grave, Salt Bite, The Raintrace, Bonewhite Tear, Stand of the Sentinels, and the Isle of Spires.
Below is a list of all the Black Boxes and where you can find them!
1Black Box – No Man’s Land
Players can locate this Black Box in the ruins of a crashed aeroplane in No Man’s Land. It’s present in the southern region of Stone’s Echo amongst many rocks in the middle of a Campfire in the north and a Shelter in the west.
2Black Box – The Whitewatch Peaks
The second Black Box is buried under the foot of the mountains in the south-western hemisphere of Plainsong. Towards the north of this burial, you’ll notice a Campfire.
Players will have to use Aloy’s Pullcaster to retrieve the box as it’s tucked away under a debris dump.
3Black Box – Jagged Deep
You can get your hands on the Jagged Deep Black Box in the oceanic waters south of No Man’s Land. Since it’s underwater, players will require a Diving Mask to get it.
Furthermore, this Black Box is obtainable through The Sea of Sands main quest.
4Black Box – The Promontory
On an elevated piece of land in the eastern zone of Plainsong, there’s a Metal Flower. You can end the hunt for The Promontory Black Box after plucking the flower and looking behind its vines.
5Black Box – Bleeding Mark
This Black Box is found in the northern part of the Horizon Forbidden West jungle. Specifically, it’s hidden in a range of snowy mountains north of The Eight Shelter and The Greenswell Salvage Contractor.
Although getting through the wreckage of the crashed plane is a daunting task, it’s easy to grab the Black Box once you reach there.
6Black Box – The Stillsands
You can find The Stillsands Black Box to the west of a Relic Ruin of the same name. In order to climb the crashed airplane, you’ll have to gain the ability to clear Metal Flowers. Subsequently, players can unleash this skill during the Seeds of the Past main quest.
Upon plucking the Metal Flower, you’ll notice the Black Box in a crate on the other side of the door.
7Black Box – The Memorial Grave
Players can locate this Black Box across a river to the east of The Memorial Grave. Like The Stillsands Black Box, this item too is behind a door inside a cargo plane wreckage. However, you’ve to storm through the door to open it.
8Black Box – Salt Bite
In the Salt Bite Settlement sits the eight Black Box. In order to obtain this Black Box, you need to hunt for the Hunter merchant and take them down with the help of the Pullcaster through a panel behind them.
Then, progress further through the mess, and you’ll get your hands on the Black Box in the end.
9Black Box – The Raintrace
You can grab this Black Box by heading north of The Raintrace Salvage Contractor. More accurately, it’s hidden near the south-eastern region of The Raintrace Hunting Grounds.
Players need to pluck the vines from the Metal Flower to get through and get their hands on a power cell. Subsequently, they need to take it to the opposite side of the plane wreckage and load the cell into their repository.
Lastly, this will authorize you to enter through the door and collect The Raintrace Black Box.
10Black Box – Bonewhite Tear
The Bonewhite Tear Black Box is on the elevated northern cliffs adjacent to a Shelter in the north-western plateau of The Bulwark.
First, you need to head to the Shelter and look for a power cell behind the Stash. Then, carry the power cell to the locked gate of a crashed plane to unlock it. You’ll find the Black Box on the other side of the door.
11Black Box – Stand of the Sentinels
In the northern rocky area of The Long Coast Relic Ruin, you’ll find the Stand of the Sentinels Black Box.
Head over to a platform made of wood opposite the wrecked plane. Then, jump and grapple to the plane’s remains to pry open the gate. Pull the crate from under more wreckage to obtain the Black Box.
12Black Box – Isle of Spires
Players can gain the last Black Box in the northern part of Isle of Spires adjacent to a Charger mounting site. It’s easy to find this box as it’s placed on the ground near the cockpit of a crashed plane.
