Finding First Mate Klaus in New World! Lore of the Cursed Ebony Hawk!

First Mate Klaus is an elite level 25 “ghost” enemy that haunts the land of Sleepy Tallow, located in the western part of the First Light region. Players will encounter him as the final boss of a side questline called “Curse of the Ebony Hawk” given by NPC Sylvia Oakes.

First Mate Klaus is located just outside the old wooden house at the very end of the curved roads of Sleepy Tallow in the First Light region of New World. He is extremely weak to nature attacks, so make sure to bring along Amber gem socketed weapons.

Refer to the map below to find the precise location of the enemy.

The first part of the quest is straightforward where you have to travel to the location, but in the second part, you will be tasked to search for three different notes about the dark events of Sleepy Tallow.

Searching for these three notes scattered around the location can be troublesome for many players, so here is a quick rundown of all the mysterious notes’ locations. Here is a map for the same.

I. Bosun’s Note

You can find the very first note in the graveyard of Sleepy Tallow. Keep following the entrance path of the location till you reach a curve to the right. Walk a bit more, and you will find yourself in the graveyard. The note, titled Bosun’s Note, is lying in front of a grave to the right marked by a cross and an Ebony Hawk Faminegeists near it.

II. Gunner’s Letter

The second note is quite easy to find as well. Right in the front of the graveyards, there is a tall central Cathedral/Church. You can easily spot this building from your location. Head inside the church, and collect the note lying on top of the table at the very end.

III. Captain’s Journal

After collecting the second note, get back on the main road and keep walking until it ends. In the end, you will find an old wooden house with three windows on its front. Enter the house and collect the “Captain’s Journal” note from a table right under the three windows.

Defeating the First Mate Klaus

Once you collect all the notes, the quest objective will change to kill five wolves, just look for them in the vicinity and slay them. After this, you will be finally tasked to kill the First Mate Klaus.

Head to the open area through the back door of the wooden house, and you will find Klaus floating near a large bell. Defeating him and returning to Constable Oakes will finish the Curse of the Ebony Hawk quest. You will be rewarded 1540 XP, 96.25 Gold, First Light Patroller’s Shirt (T3), 250 Territory Standing, and 20 Azoth for completing this quest.

The Lore behind the Ebony Hawk

The lore of Ebony Hawk, the ship, is quite a creepy but fascinating one. Before the beginning of the quest, Oakes tells you about the town of Sleepy Tallow, home to many sailors.

The rumor is that the sailors came back from a perilous voyage one day and had lost a man. No one would go into details as to how he died, but by the next morning, no one was left alive. Now, the traveler says, the village is populated only by their ghosts! The spooky quest revolves around unveiling the secrets of what happened to the sailors.

Looking at the notes player collect in this quest, we can string up the story and events properly:

  • Bosun’s Note
  • A Rigger’s Plea
  • Gunner’s Letter
  • Captain’s Journal

I. Bosun’s Note

It turns out the sailors were looking for a way to leave the accursed island by sailing out of it. Unfortunately, the sea storm and its monsters have never been kind to anyone. To appease the sea, the captain decided to perform a ritual which he read in a mysterious book, and as it always goes, the ritual demanded a human sacrifice.

II. A Rigger’s Plea

All the crewmen unwillingly tied up a fellow sailor to the ship’s mast as the sacrifice, and the captain began the ritual. The sea was not appeased and blasted the ship with the storm. The mysterious book got lost in the sea, and the ritual failed. All the sailors were forced to return to the town along with the dead body of the sacrifice.

III. Gunner’s Letter

After returning home, soon the dark clouds surrounded the town, wolves attacked and started killing the families. The dead sacrifice returned as a monster. A sailor planned an escape for his family. Ironically, the sailors wanted to appease the monster, but they created a worse one.

IV. Captain’s Journal

Captain’s Journal seems to be the last part of the story as, at this point, he is the only one left alive in the town. The captain acknowledges that he has committed a sinful act by sacrificing his crewman, none other than Klaus

He believes if he still had the book, maybe he could have stopped all this, but now all he hears is the screaming and pounding on his house’s door. The final lines of the Journal suggest that the captain proceeded to open the door to end his “nightmare.”
