Why is Fortnite Hated in the Gaming Community?

Fortnite is one of those Battle Royale games that ticks most of the checkboxes; it has addictive gameplay, well-designed world mechanics, and unique experience. All the while being free to play!

All of this has led the game to amass a player base of more than 125 million players, which has been consistent over the past few months.

However, when you look around the gaming community on different platforms such as Reddit and Discord, you’d find thread after thread of users ranting against Fortnite.

Is all this hatred just for the sake of it, or is there something massively wrong with the free to play Battle Royale game? Let’s find out.

1. Major Arguments Against Fortnite

Fortnite is considered bad mainly because of its popularity, and many people hate it just because it’s edgy to hate games that are getting successful.

But that is not all; Fortnite has a bad name due to the toxic community filled with underage players and high numbers of trolls and hackers.

Most players who hate Fortnite have at least once tried to get in the game and were put off by the collection and fast-paced building mechanics or because they didn’t do so well in the game.

But these reasons might persuade one from coming back, but they are not something that would bring on eternal hatred for Fortnite.

2. Fast-Paced Building Mechanics: A Turn Off?

The building mechanics of Fortnite is what makes it stand out from other popular battle royale games such as PUBG and Warzone and is probably the main reason why first time players hate this game.

If you go guns blazing against a skilled player who can build and stand inside a well-fortified castle in mere seconds, you will obviously not like the game instantly.

It is frustrating at the very least, but these builders are not doing something wrong; they are just playing the game as it’s meant to be.

The building aspect of Fortnite has basic resource management skills behind it that makes it interesting and fun to utilize the gameplay mechanic fully.

For first time players, getting the hang of it will be hard, especially if you are migrating from a shooter. Once you get the hang of it, it’s just smooth sailing.

Thus, for players coming into Fortnite just for a pure shooter experience, sadly, Fortnite is not the game for you as shooting is just one aspect of it and not the main objective.

3. Toxic Community

Anyone who’s played a bit of Fortnite would attest that the community has one of the highest numbers of toxic fan bases. If you don’t believe me, try dropping out of a match with random players.

Having the crown of being the world’s most popular game also comes with its downsides, including trolls and hackers. Being fully free to play doesn’t help this fact, as it’s free for all hackers and griefers.

The overexposure to media has attracted annoying underage players, immature teens, and adults that are, for the most part, influenced by egotistical streamers and are ruining the game for others.

Just try to get on Youtube and Twitch; you will find an infinite number of click baits containing Fortnite, which adds fuel to the fire.

For the most part, Fortnite’s user base is pleasant and enjoyable, but frequently you’d come across griefers and trolls.

Not to say this is unique to Fortnite only, as games like CSGO and Siege have their fair share of toxicity, but Fortnite, which boasts of being child-friendly, should have a better community.

4. Lack of Originality

When Fortnite first came out, most people found it a straight rip-off from Player’s Unknown: Battlegrounds.

The battle royale mode was the same; the loot and collections system was the same. The new building mechanic was added on top of it (which again, most players hated).

It felt like Fortnite tried to replicate PUBG’s success but left out the major features such as weapon attachments, first-person view, and customizations, to name a few.

We’ve come a long way till the alpha release with so many things added on top of the base game, with the new updates coming in pretty regularly, but the sentiment remains.

The fundamentals never changed, and in people’s minds, it still left the image of just being another PUBG battle royale game (Even though most of the aspects are quite different, but that is up to you to decide which ones you prefer more).

5. Weapon Bloom

The weapons in Fortnite utilize the concept of bloom, which means that the shots fired by the player have a chance to miss the target purely based on luck (not to be confused with recoil), even if the crosshair is placed directly on the enemy.

This has the effect that even the most accurate players can sometimes still lose based on luck. Similarly, a rookie with no aim control can one-shot advanced players.

Some say it is to maintain realism, but in a game where you can snipe someone while flipping in the air, realism has no actual place.

Thus, Fortnite should not be taken as a hardcore shooter, and if you go in thinking this, you’ll only be met with disappointment.

6. Is Fortnite Overhyped?

With the negative points out of the way, Fornite does have its advantages.

First of all, the developers listen to feedback. Epic has been great on the community feedback side, no matter if it’s a weapon that needs a buff or if there needs to be some variation to a game mode.

Fortnite has been receiving constant changes which are not only limited to new weapons but new objects and events as well.

Regular updates and patches keep the players engaged, and that is one of the main reasons the game has had a large fan base for so long.

So Fortnite is not actually overhyped, but it’s just that some aspects of the game are not so well, and as long as players do not expect the game to be something that it is not (a hardcore shooter), they will be quite impressed.
