The Yakuza series has been a long-running franchise for a while now, and last year’s Yakuza: Like A Dragon was regarded as one of the best games in the series. SEGA had also praised the sales of the western release of the game, confirming that this direction is the perfect fit for the Yakuza franchise.
The series’ new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, had a lot to live up to when he replaced the Kazuma Kiryu. But, fans were welcoming of Ichiban and grew to love his charm and charisma. It was great to see how the franchise transitioned from one protagonist to the other, despite the stark character differences between the two. Now, SEGA and studio Ryu Ga Gotoku have some excellent news for fans of Like A Dragon.
This news comes from a post on the studio’s official website. Masayoshi Yokoyama, the studio’s new director, has confirmed that a sequel to Yakuza: Like A Dragon is now in the works.
The game is looking to continue the story of Ichiban Kasuga and will be developed by producer Sakamoto and directors Horii, Ito, and Mitake. Yokoyama, along with Takeuchi and Furuta, will be working on the story of the sequel.
Yokoyama hopes to reveal more about the game in the coming future and states that this title will be a bit different but similar to all the games made by the studio.
It had been previously announced that the Yakuza series would stick with the turn-based combat style, while the Judgement series would continue to use the brawler style from earlier games. Fans are hoping the studio makes some improvements to the battle system and flow of combat to avoid some of the difficulty spikes present in Yakuza: Like A Dragon.
Fans are also expecting the game to be based in a new city in addition to Kamurocho and Yokohama, both of which were used in Like A Dragon and Lost Judgement.
Considering Lost Judgement had a simultaneous worldwide release, fans should expect the sequel to Like A Dragon to release in a similar manner.
