Would you re-download Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to save space?

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has been the most ambitious installment in the franchise’s history, receiving the most post-launch support to date. A significant new update has been planned for the Norse adventure title for the second year of DLC, but it comes with a catch: you will need to re-download the game.

The new update, patch 1.4.1, will force players to re-download the entire game as Ubisoft is crunching the total file size across all platforms. The good news is, players will have more space on their drives and lesser data to download (if they have any data limits). The developers have had to perform a significant “data restructuring” for this to come into effect as it is impossible to simply shrink the size of the game. The data has to be replaced.

Here is the breakdown of the before-after effects of patch 1.41. and how much space every platform will save.

PlatformFrom 1.4.0 – 1.4.1After 1.4.1Space Saved
PC~78GB~77GB~34GB
PS4~67GB~75GB~30GB
PS5~40GB~77GB~13GB
Xbox One~62GB~63GB~30GB
Xbox Series X|S~71GB~72GB~44GB

The changes in the file sizes are pretty substantial, and while most will get a decent amount of free space, the real winners are the Xbox Series X/S platforms gaining back 44GB, enough to store several other games.

While the saved disc space must be appealing to many, players wonder if it is a necessary change. After all, it does require a complete re-download of the game. Ubisoft had answers for those queries as well. Along with the reduced file size, the developers stated the changes would result in faster load times, improved world streaming data, and better overall performance. There are also plans to release more DLC for the game in the coming year, so fans will need the extra space for the new content.

Assassins Creed Valhalla

For those who have already purchased the first two major expansions for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Wrath of the Druids, and The Siege of Paris, patch 1.4.1 will not affect either. The update will only affect the base game, with the expansions’ sizes remaining the same.

Overall, this seems like a good move from Ubisoft. While some may begrudge having to download the game again, it will ultimately be in their favor in the long run. But, it would have been nice if Ubisoft had made this optional instead of mandatory.
