AMD Announces Ryzen 7040U Power Efficient APUs Codenamed “Phoenix”

Despite the lack of availability of AMD’s 7040H series, the company has finally announced the mobile Ryzen 7040U series processors designed for ultrathin laptops and handheld gaming consoles. The company also boasts that the 7040U series will go toe-to-toe with Apple’s M2 chips.

The Ryzen 7040U series codenamed “Phoenix” are low-power (15 to 30W) mobile series, featuring RDNA3 integrated graphics with up to 8 Zen4 Cores and GPU clock up to 2.7 GHz. AMD is expecting remarkable efficiency and ‘exceptional battery life’ from its low-power series.

AMD introduced four new SKUs with four to eight Zen4 cores and boost clock up to 5.1 GHz. These four new SKUs are:

  • 7840U
  • 7640U
  • 7540U
  • 7440U

These feature 8, 6, and 4 cores with turbo clock speeds varying from 4.7 to 5.1 GHz. What gamers should be excited for is that the series features 780M, 760M and 740M graphics with 12, 8, and 4 RDNA3 CUs, respectively. It’s evident that the company is going big on graphics for this series.

Ryzen 7 7840U and Ryzen 5 7640U will also receive support for Ryzen Artificial Intelligence, which is a dedicated FPGA-based AI engine developed by Xilinx, resulting in better performance in AI-related workloads.

AMD has made some big claims on the battery life of the series, claiming that it “invests heavily in leadership efficiency” and that the 7040U series chips will have “smart power management designed to deliver the longest possible time unplugged.”

The company is yet to announce when these chips will hit retail shelves as the Phoenix 7040H has been delayed by 2 months, but this announcement implies that a potential release is not that far away. Perhaps we’ll get more updates about the release at Computex in Taiwan later this month.
