Celebrate Your Viking Conquests with a Nice Fireworks Show in Valheim

The genius players of Valheim have discovered a new application for Surtling Cores and it’s quite a cracking one.

If you’ve gotten a proper lay of the Norse realm of Valheim – or a decent lay of it at least, it’s a huge map. And you’ve definitely come across your fair share of Surtling Cores. To recap, Surtlings are monsters that try to burn you with fireballs if you try to get a little too friendly with them. Overcome a Surtling and they leave behind Surtling Cores which you can pick up and use to craft some really important in-game items like smelters, charcoal kilns, blast furnaces, and fast-travel portals.

Early on in the game, it’s difficult getting your hands on these cores as it requires a lot of exploration. So while this, and its uses, are reasons enough to save and ration them as much as possible, there’s also this recently discovered use of Surtling Cores to consider. And to find out what it is, you’ll have to hurl one into a bonfire. We know it sounds mad but if you play along, you’ll be treated to something special.

You can throw a Core (often found in Dungeons, by the way) into fire by equipping one in a numbered slot and then pressing that number when you’re close to/interact with a fire. And the result is as you can see below,

It might be obvious to many but we’re going to highlight it anyway. Throwing a core into fire renders it worthless, so you can’t use it to craft anything after. But it might be worth it because the show that follows is pretty spectacular, bathing the forest, or swamp or mountain (whichever biome you’re in) in a bright yet warm glow. Do try it at night, though, because if you’re doing it in the day it might not turn out as fun.

This could be a fun way to celebrate a victory against one of the bosses, or getting a fellow player’s attention, or just a way to have a grand old time. Valheim is the gift that keeps on giving for sure, but Surtling Cores are definitely more of a one and done type deal. So, be sure to use them wisely, fireworks or not.
