Hogwarts Legacy:  PC Frame Drops, Stuttering and Lag Fixes

While Hogwarts Legacy is receiving rave reviews for providing an incredible experience in the Harry Potter world, it has received criticisms for its performance issues such as stuttering, frame drops, lag and crashes. This seems to be happening on the PC version solely.

Players who are playing the PC version of Hogwarts Legacy have reported frame drops, stuttering, lag as well as multiple crashes. No such reports have been made by players on PlayStation and Xbox. Here’s how to fix the performance issues for the PC version of Hogwarts Legacy:

1. Disable Control Flow Guard (CFG)

According to Reddit user u/Daxidol, they were able to completely fix the frame drop issues while playing Hogwarts Legacy by disabling Control Flow Guard (CFG). Go to “Exploit Protection”, click “Program Settings”, add the file path for Hogwarts Legacy, scroll down to CFG and disable it.

Once you have disabled Control Flow Guard, click Apply and restart your PC. This should fix all the performance issues that you’re having with Hogwarts Legacy. If you’re still facing those issues, then move on to the other methods listed below.

2. Turn Off Ray Tracing

It is possible that the stuttering and frame drops stem from the use of Ray Tracing in Hogwarts Legacy. Either turn down the Ray Tracing to a lower setting or completely disable it. Ray Tracing is present in the Settings menu under Display Options.

Disabling Ray Tracing will give you the maximum performance boost and could potentially fix the stuttering as well as frame rate issues. Change all your graphical quality settings to one lower preset, if possible (Ultra to High, High to Medium etc.) You can go back later and tune it.

3. Disable VSync

In order to get the maximum performance in Hogwarts Legacy, turn off VSync and set your Frame Rate from 60 FPS to Uncapped. This will allow you to figure out exactly how much FPS you’re getting for the game on your PC.

Additionally, go to Display Options in the Settings menu, and change your Window mode to ‘Windowed Fullscreen’ as it is considered the best option to run the game. If possible, lower your resolution from 4k to 2k, 2k to 1080p etc.) if your GPU is being overworked.

4. Update Game and Driver

Make sure that Hogwarts Legacy is updated to its latest version as well as your graphics drivers. Intel has released ‘Game Ready’ drivers for Hogwarts Legacy. Install all the required drivers for Hogwarts Legacy to perform well on your PC.

You can download the ‘Game Ready’ drivers here. Check for the latest Nvidia or AMD GPU drivers to increase stability. Make sure to install the latest version of the game. As it is launch week, it is possible that the developers will roll out updates regularly to fix performance issues.

5. Re-install Hogwarts Legacy

If all else fails, then it’s time to re-install the game completely. Sometimes, installing a game from scratch may repair files which may have been corrupted during the previous install. Whether you’re on Steam or Epic Games, uninstall the game and initiate a fresh install.

Close any unnecessary background applications. Unnecessary background apps can sometimes cause conflicts, causing the game to crash.

It is possible that these methods might not work for you. If the issues still continue, then the best course of action would be to wait for an official Day One patch from the developers themselves.
