Everyone was left open-mouthed when Bethesda director Todd Howard revealed that Starfield would house over a thousand fully explorable planets across 100 Solar Systems. The prospect of diving into a vast galaxy brimming with unique lore will never be not exciting for enthusiasts, but many begged to differ here.
This is because a massive horde of gamers is of the opinion that due to these 1,000 planets being procedurally generated, the in-game world would seem empty, lacking the handcrafted content that Bethesda is known to offer.
However, in a recent interview, director Todd Howard assured fans that Starfield would have more handcrafted content than any previous Bethesda game. He added that this handcrafted content would co-exist with the procedurally generated planets that find refuge in the IP’s expansive galaxy.
We do a lot of procedural generation [in Starfield], but I would keep in mind that we’ve always done that. It’s a big part of Skyrim in terms of questing and some other things we do. We generate landscape using procedural systems, so we’ve always kind of worked on it.Todd Howard
Talking about the scope of the handcrafted features, Howard claimed that there are more than 200,000 lines of dialogue in Starfield, and most of this handcrafting will be found in the RPG’s campaign.
If people just want to do what they’re used to in our games, and follow the main quest, and do the questlines, you’re gonna see what you’d kind of expect from usTodd Howard
Going by what Bethesda’s director is saying, it looks like exploring the open world will have a procedurally generated feel while completing the main objectives will add a compelling and detailed element to the game.
Therefore, if you are worried that Starfield wouldn’t be as meaningful as other Bethesda titles, rest easy. As confirmed, the game will arrive with plenty of handcrafted content and will be 20% longer than any other game by the company.
A run purely through the campaign will take 30-40 hours to be completed. Now take the side quests into consideration as well, and you have a title that’ll keep you hooked for hundreds of hours.
