Ubisoft Apologizes Following Ableism Accusations

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, which was rolled out on November 10th, has received positive acclaim from critics throughout the world. By addressing the issues encountered in Origins and Odyssey, devs have released a smooth game in Valhalla.

The graphics are stupendous. Moreover, the game through its side quests encourages you to explore the depths of an extraordinary Viking culture. Thus, you are further able to soak in the sublime visuals of Valhalla.

But then again, nothing is perfect, right?

Can I Play That?’s founder, Courtney Craven has found a drawback with the game. One of the enemies of the game named Eorforwine has a rather offensive background story.

“Horribly burned in a childhood accident, Eorforwine is terrified someone will see her disfigured face. She relieves her fury with bursts of violence.”

Writer

“I didn’t include this in my Assassin’s Creed Valhalla impressions piece but it’s equally important to address. This is a character description in the game. It’s absolutely unacceptable to talk about facial differences this way. Writers for games and otherwise need to do better.”

Moreover, this description by Ubisoft led to them being accused of making ableist remarks. As a result, the French video game company apologized on Twitter. They also announced that such language will be removed in a forthcoming update.

This isn’t the first time when Ubisoft have found themselves in the middle of controversies. Back in 2019, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was under scrutiny due to forced heterosexual romances.

The Legacy of the First Blade DLC never gave the option for same-sex relationships even if a player had previously pursued it. Therefore, an update was released for the same which promised to “better reflect the nature of the relationship for players selecting a non-romantic storyline.”

Only this much is known about Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s upcoming update. No official date has been provided for the update’s release till now.
