Kratos is already a fierce man, and developing his skills is the sure way of ensuring that our beloved God of War stays at the top, in a fit shape, and far superior to any foe he might face.
God of War Ragnarok, features a very interesting skill progression system allowing players to select and unlock unique skills according to their taste and preference. These skills change the gameplay immensely, and are capable of making your adventure easy for you, ( if you invest in them carefully) or extremely difficult.
To help you build the most efficient God of War, I have compiled a list of all the best skills which you should consider unlocking.
Please keep in mind the list reflects my personal opinions and is in no particular order as all of them are important in their respective categories.
1. Best Leviathan Axe Skills
These skills can be purchased for Kratos’ Leviathan Axe. Once the axe is upgraded enough then only some of the higher skills can be purchased.
I. Glacial Rake
Glacial Rake is a Leviathan axe-based skill. It is a powerful ability that boosts the ice power of the axe and is extremely useful when fighting hordes of enemies. The ability applies frost to the opponents it strikes and can hit as many enemies, as unfortunate enough to stand in its path. The attack is extremely fast and is one of the most powerful attacks (skill) that you can get for your axe early on.
How to Unlock: You will need at least 750Xp, to purchase this skill.
II. Serpents Snare
Serpents Snare is yet another powerful skill that you can unlock for your axe, the skill allows you to deal massive damage to a single or even group of enemies. It is a very satisfying heavy attack and can be used as a combo finisher. The attack is a bit slow and can take some time to execute properly. You can pair this skill with an axe pommel which grants health with each hit of this skill, which is very useful on higher difficulties.
How to Unlock: You will need to upgrade your axe first to at least Lvl 2 and require 1000Xp to unlock and purchase this skill.
2. Best Blades of Chaos Skills
These skills can be purchased for Kratos’ Blades of Chaos. Once the blades are upgraded enough then only some of the higher skills can be purchased.
I. Hyperion Grapple
The Hyperion Grapple is an interesting skill that you can unlock for the Blades of Chaos. To unlock this skill, The skill allows Kratos to grapple enemies and then yank himself to the enemy instead of pulling them towards him. This allows you to deal massive stun damage, and the move can be followed up with close–range combos dealing additional damage. The upgraded version of this skill even deals damage to other enemies unfortunate enough to stand close to your target.
How to Unlock: You will require at least 750Xp to purchase this skill.
II. Plume of Chaos
Plume of Chaos is a late-game skill for Blades of Chaos that ends your combos with a devastating attack. The skill allows Kratos, to deal burn damage through Area of Effect (AoE) as the skill allows Kratos to finish his combos with a huge explosion. It is certainly not easy to obtain the skill without a grind, but it is worth it.
How to Unlock: You will need to upgrade your Blades of Chaos to Lvl 4 and need at least 4000Xp in order to unlock and purchase this skill.
3. Best Atreus Skills
These skills can be purchased for the companion Atreus. Once the Talon bow wielded by Atreus is upgraded enough then only some of the higher skills can be purchased.
I. Watchful Protector
Watchful Protector is a skill available for Atreus, and I suggest you pick this skill up even if you find Atreus’s skills a bit lackluster, watchful protector is certainly going to help you. The skill allows Atreus to distract your enemies giving you time to retreat or make your next move whenever you are in a pinch. Pick this skill as early as you can, as it will allow you to heal/change tactics on the fly in any tough battle.
How to Unlock: You will need at least 750Xp to purchase this skill.
II. Breaching Bash
Breaching bash is another skill that I recommend of Atreus as it allows Atreus to deal stun damage and since Atreus is already dealing a lot of stun damage through his bow and arrows, why not properly equip him with the right skills? The ability allows Atreus to perform a shield bash whenever he is fighting in close range and deal stun damage.
How to Unlock: You will require at least 500Xp to purchase this skill.
4. Best Freya Skills
These skills can be purchased to companion Freya. Higher skills can be only unlocked and purchased if preceding skills have been also acquired.
I. Goddess Focus
The Goddess Focus skill for Freya helps in enhancing her Valkyrie form. This in turn helps in boosting her melee skills. The Valkyrie skill tree allows Freya to make use of her powerful strength and allows her to perform strong melee or ranged attacks. The skill allows Freya to add more specialized abilities to her ranged attacks.
How to Unlock: You will need to acquire the skill Goddess Aggression (1000Xp) first in order to unlock this skill, and at least 1000Xp to purchase the skill.
II. Sonic Echoes
The Sonic Echoes is a skill for Freya which enhances her Sonic attacks. The sonic arrows are a type of arrow that Freya can use, which deals stun damage to its victims. The sonic echoes skill allows Freya to attack her enemies who are affected by her sonic status, this in turn applies stun to nearby enemies.
How to Unlock: To unlock this skill you must first acquire the Sonic Potency skill (500Xp) and need at least 1000Xp to purchase.
5. Best Draupnir Spear Skills
These skills can be purchased for Draupnir Spear. Once the spear is upgraded enough, then only some of the higher skills can be purchased.
I. Phalanx Breaker
Phalanx Breaker is a skill for the Draupnir Spear, which is arguably the best weapon in the entire game. This skill offers a powerful dual attack in which, a powerful overhead sweep is performed to break the guard of an enemy, which is followed by a rising attack, which is capable of launching weaker enemies in the air.
How to Unlock: You will first need to upgrade the spear to at least Lvl 6, and require 500Xp to unlock and purchase this skill.
II. Maelstrom
The Draupnir spear is meant to be a fast but powerful weapon, the Maelstrom skill for the weapon perfectly complements these characteristics of the spear. This skill allows you to stack the damage with each successful hit as long as you don’t receive any damage. This allows you to deal some massive damage after you have landed a couple of hits. The impact of each attack increases with each successful hit as long as you don’t receive any damage or else it will reset.
The skill allows you to progress to the Violent Maelstrom skill which further enhances the spear’s damage.
How to Unlock: You will need at least Lvl 5, and need at least 500Xp to unlock and purchase this skill.
These were some of the best skills in God of War Ragnarok, which you can unlock and develop according to your playstyle and weapon choice.
6. About God of War Ragnarok
God of War Ragnarok is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released on November 9, 2022, for PS4 and PS5.
Ragnarok is the ninth installment in the God of War series, chronologically, and the sequel to 2018’s God of War. Loosely based on Norse mythology, the game is set in ancient Norway and features series protagonists Kratos and his young son Atreus. The events of the game are expected to initiate Ragnarok – a series of events that, according to Norse lore, bring about the end of days and the death of the Norse gods.
